The Federal Government has announced a welcome investment in enabling infrastructure for new housing in country areas.
The $2 billion Local Infrastructure Fund will help councils build local roads and connect water, sewerage and other so-called ‘trunk infrastructure’ to new housing.
A quarter of this national fund — $500 million — has been set aside specifically for regional areas.
“This is a strong investment in our communities, and our capacity to support new housing and population growth,” RCV Chair Cr Rob Amos said.
“However, it’s critical we get the fine print right.”
“Rural councils must be included in the design of the funding guidelines and setting the criteria for approved project types.”
Cr Amos said other welcome initiatives announced in Treasurer Jim Chalmer’s fifth budget were;
“This is a modest budget with its focus on big-ticket tax reform and other key investments,” Cr Amos said.
“But there are some bright spots for rural councils, and RCV looks forward to working with the Commonwealth on program design and delivery.”
“Partnering with local councils guarantees the biggest impact for the Federal Government’s investment,” Cr Amos said
