Rural Councils Victoria (RCV) welcomes the state government announcement for a substantial investment in new housing projects designed to attract and support workers to jobs in rural Victoria.
The announcement of the first round of a $150 million Regional Worker Accommodation Fund will see more than 20 shovel-ready housing projects to build accommodation for workers across the health, educational, agricultural and tourism sectors.
Projects announced in the first round include housing in Omeo, Timboon, Colac, Bairnsdale, Nhill, Hopetoun, Beaufort, Eildon, Castlemaine, Kyabram, Kerang, Buloke Shire and Irymple. We welcome the focus on key sectors such as health, agriculture, education, manufacturing and tourism.
The initiative addresses the critical need for affordable housing in these areas, releasing pressure on local rental markets and laying the groundwork for sustainable growth. Too often a job is filled but the potential employee cannot take up the position as there is nowhere for them to live nearby.
“The announcement to build homes specifically for rural workers represents a significant advancement in improving the quality of life in our communities while also increasing our capacity to attract and retain workers; an ongoing challenge that our communities face,” said Cr Mary-Ann Brown, Chair of RCV.
The investment will provide workers with secure, comfortable housing in proximity to their workplaces.
“The strength of our rural communities are fundamental to Victoria’s economy, and this announcement underscores the essential role housing plays in cultivating vibrant and resilient communities,” said Cr Brown.
RCV has long been advocating for targeted solutions to the specific and unique challenges rural councils face through our Rural Housing Action Plan. This first round of funding is an important step and we look forward to seeing further progress as the fund continues to roll out.
“We encourage the government to work with RCV to ensure that these housing developments not only meet immediate needs but are also sustainable and well-integrated into our local communities,” said Cr Brown.
